School History

“Unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it bears much fruit”. These are the words of the Lord. Very aptly the motto of our school “Convent Of Jesus And Mary High School, Kharghar” is “ to grow, to live, to bloom”.

INTRODUCTION:

The Sisters of Jesus and Mary of the Province of Pune took up the initiative of starting an English medium Co-educational High School in Kharghar, from Pre-Primary to Std. X. The kindly deed of sowing a seed of establishing Convent of Jesus and Mary High School in Kharghar was possible because of the vision of our Jesus and Mary Sisters, of our Provincial Government led by Sr. Lucia and her Council and later by Sr. Astrid, Sr. Diana and their Councils. This seed has now sprouted as you see, into the beautiful Convent of Jesus and Mary High School and Junior College, on the same land which once seemed a barren place with reptiles crawling from the hills around surrounded by nothing, but wilderness.

The project was inspired by Fr. Larry Pereira, the then Dean of Navi Mumbai on behalf of the Archdiocese of Mumbai. This would make the Church present through the great social service of Education, particularly to the young. The institution would also cater to the education of the boarders of Prem Dan Social Service Center- the sister Institution. The following account will hopefully show that the Institution has remained true to its motto- to grow, to live and to bloom.

FOUNDATION:

Under constructionThe School Building project was undertaken during the term of office of Sr. Lucia D’Silva, Provincial Superior and her Council after the plot was purchased in 1998 through CIDCO-the City Industrial Development Corporation.

The foundation stone was blessed by Fr. Larry Pereira on  April 6th  2001 in the presence of the Religious of Jesus and Mary as well as Mr. Julius  Pereira-the Project Manager ; Mr. Lele and Associates-the Architects; Contractors of M/s Sunil Construction Company and Fr. Ubaldo Baretto – our Parish Priest. The construction of the building commenced and was completed in 10 months.

13th June 2002- the day the school opened is marked as a milestone in the history of the Institution. 65 parents with their little ones were present together with some children from Prem Dan. All were enthusiastically welcomed. A meaningful prayer service was conducted on the pedagogy of St. Claudine-the Foundress of the Congregation of Jesus and Mary. Souvenir pictures of St. Claudine were given at the end of the prayer service. The pedagogy of love seen in St. Claudine served as a direction for the school community towards the future educational enterprises.

14th June 2002-The school session started with great enthusiasm with 60 students on the roll which included the Nursery, Kindergarten and Std I. These classes were taught by Sr. Usha, Sr. Gerard and Mrs. Raj Sindu, our first teacher. The Sisters started their work with much dedication.

The first Community of Sisters who resided at Prem Dan Social Service Center were Sr. Madeleine Pallan- Manager, Sr. Usha Pereira- Principal, and Sr. Gerard Paul-her assistant together with Sr. Tracy Peter and Sr. Philomena Barla who attended to the Prem Dan Hostel.

3rd February 2003 was another big day for the Sisters of Jesus and Mary and the collaborators- the school was officially inaugurated by His Lordship Rev. Bishop Agnelo Gracias, of Navi Mumbai Deanery. The school building which is the work of Mr. Julius Pereira and his team was much admired and commended. He still remains very active and takes the initiative to support and advice our Jesus and Mary Sisters in their structural enterprises and undertakings.

June 2003-the number of students on the roll increased to 263- from the Pre-Primary to Std IV.

GROWTH AND PROGRESS OF THE SCHOOL:

In June 2006 Sr. Antonette Monteiro became the Principal of the School. With her innovative ideas, Sister has taken the school to great heights. To cater to the growing demand for convent education, our school started with two divisions in the Pre-Primary section in the year 2006. Today, by natural process of growth, we have two divisions up to the tenth standard.  It became necessary to have new and bigger furniture for our growing children. In 2007, benches made of solid wood with iron frames were bought.

Every year the school progressed rung by rung. It was a tough uphill task to bring the school to where it is now. Different fund raising activities-Joy Fun Day, Fetes, Class Canteens,  contributions generously made by parents and benefactors, and of course the resource from the Management of the school went a long way in meeting escalating costs.

When the school started, we had just the basic facilities – an open hall, a ground for playing and infrastructure for further development. In 2006, the leveling of the school playground was done. Today, the playground is fully equipped with courts for basketball and volleyball, a football ground and space for various sports activities. In 2010, a play area for our tiny tots with amenities such as swings, slides, see-saw etc was set up.

Computer LabIn 2007 Computers were installed in a fully air-conditioned Computer Laboratory. To make studying more interesting, an Audiovisual Room was also set up as well as a fully equipped Science Laboratory. The need for an auditorium to have functions and programmes was essential. Soon this too was shortly arranged arranged for.

In 2008 An Auditorium was prepared after the open basement which once served as a hall was closed on all sides. To maintain the beauty of the place, half the walls of the auditorium, classrooms and corridors are tastefully tiled.

In 2010 an LCD Projector was installed in the auditorium, to be used for assemblies, workshops, seminars and meetings. We have a Library in which a store house of books is made accessible to students and teachers.

In 2011 Text Messaging-SMS was started to update parents with information regarding school matters. This has benefited both- school and parents tremendously. Later an Intercom System was installed. The connection to every classroom helps in instant communication of announcements and information from the Principal’s Office.

In 2012 The CCTV- a need of the time- was installed in the classrooms and on the school premises.

OTHER SUCCESSES:

In 2009 The Recognition of the School was obtained.

“How Good God Is!”- The last words of St. Claudine our Mother Foundress come to mind.  It is her intercession and the hard work of the Management that bore fruit. Sr. Helen Dias the then Manager and Sr. Antonette the Principal of the School spared no effort to obtain this official recognition of our school by the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education.

Board Examinations:

In 2010 the first batch of students appeared for the S.S.C. Board Examination. Our students came out with flying colours – we had 100% results and Sakshi Gupta stood 1st in school securing 92%. We thank God for His bountiful blessings on all the members of our Staff, Students, Parents and above all our Principal Sr. Antonette for their selfless service and care.

In 2011 Asish Raut stood 1st securing 91.27%.

In 2012 Simran Kaur Aulakh stood 1st securing 97.64%. Our school became the centre for the Marathi Medium, S.S.C. Board Examination.

In 2013 once again we had 100% results- Dhanushi Beloskar stood 1st securing 94.45%.

A SPECIAL CELEBRATION:

In 2011- we celebrated 10 Glorious Years of our growth and progress. To mark this occasion a musical entitled ‘Annie’ directed by Fr. Gerald Fernandes was staged. The Theme was, ‘The Girl Child.’ Once again our celebration was graced by His Lordship Rev. Bishop Agnelo Gracias. A souvenir on this occasion was released by the Bishop.

THE JUNIOR COLLEGE-COMMERCE

Junior CollegeAug. 201224th August 2012 The establishment of the Junior College marked another milestone in the history of the Institution. It was inaugurated by Sr. Prudence D’Souza, the Chief Guest who cut the symbolic ribbon at the ceremony and addressed the first batch of students with her inspiring words.

LOOKING FORWARD:

Much awaits us in the future-the need to extend the school building has become inevitable. Construction work is in progress under the capable guidance of Mr. Julius Pereira and his team. With faith and confidence we place our plans in God’s caring Hands. “Unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies it produces abundant fruit” – our humble beginnings have brought the present total on our rolls to 1300 students.  We are ever grateful to all our well wishers for their love, co-operation, support and encouragement so willingly given at all times.

In conclusion, we turn once again to give thanks to God Almighty, for His bountiful blessings on us at CJM Kharghar and continue to pray-

                                          MAY GOD BLESS US ALL!
